Consumerization: the user determines

‘Clouds and cloud-connected devices are changing the world of work and our daily interactions. Tech-savvy and always-connected, people want faster, more intuitive technology, uninterrupted services, and the freedom to work anywhere, anytime, on a variety of devices.’

With Consumerization it’s about the fact that users are in the lead when it is about the choice of applications or the devices that will be used. Think about devices such as smartphones or a tablet. The users choose his or her own tools (Bring Your Own Device) and is because of this more productive in the working environment. New devices such as the last generation smartphones or game consoles are increasing the interaction and possibilities that companies have to approach customers and users.

Microsoft’s vision is to offer ‘Continuous services’ on ‘Connected devices’. Central in this is the user – people of user centric – and the services that were offered no matter the type of the device. Products that were brought on the market years ago, were meant for the concept one user on one desktop. This is around 2012 not the case anymore. In 2011 a power user had 5 to 7 internet connected devices. These are mostly the devices of a user themselves (Bring Your Own Device). BYOD increases the user’s productivity. In 2011 there are, according to Microsoft, 916 million smart connected devices sold. This number will be doubled in 2016 to 1.84 billion! It was proven from a research of IDC that 34% of the users of an organisation approaches business data and applications from their own device. IDC also did this research with end users instead of companies and it turns out that the number is higher, namely 69% of the users approaches business data and application from their own device.
